I think there is no absolutely no question,
the most extraordinary thing that has
happened at this festival, and the most
extraordinary thing that has ever
happened at a Scott Joplin festival,
is the fact that a bunch of people from
Norway came over and taught us how
to do the music of our second native
composer.....a most amazing
Cultural Resourses Preservationist
JAN HAMILTON DOUGLASS
of the Scott Joplin Residence,
The group re-creates (the music) in their own way, but the the performances
are authentic and charming. This is a finely tuned ensemble that delivers
(its) program with joy and a sincere love for the music that is mostly forgotten these days.
There is so much talent here, especially
the Ophelia orchestra.
That group if musicians is nothing short
of amazing..... had the time of my life.
SCOTT JOPLIN INTERNATIONAL
.....this orchestra under (Morten Gunnar
Larsen's) leadership is a natural for
American popular music from the turn
of the last century to the beginning
of the second world war
......the American newspaper
Mississippi Rag polled Ophelia Orchestra as world's best
band in its genre, which indicates the status of this Norwegian band,
not to mention the quality of the music it delivers.
What a brilliant history lesson in
the roots of jazz.
A fabulous living museum dedicated
to music from the first three decades
of the last century......a dynamic and
precise ensemble .....which plays with
the same natural authority as,
for example Oslo Philharmonic,
or the Norwegian Chamber
I can't imagine being too effusive in
my praise..... this nine-piece
aggregation from Oslo, Norway is
among the finest extant in performing
early American Ragtime Jazz and
Morten Gunnar Larsen has become perhaps
the most important ambassador for ragtime
piano.....the work he has done with Ophelia
Ragtime Orchestra (has) given him a
reputation of almost heroic proportions.
